01Introduction

My vocation for the visual arts began when I was five or six years old. I was in first grade, and the drawing teacher at the Normal Nº 1 school in Rosario, Nidia Bollero, discovered that I was a good draughtswoman and rewarded my work with a kiss and words of praise.

02Background

My father, too, encouraged my drawing, buying me coloured pencils and pads of plain paper, always spurring me on. He was a tailor, and one of his clients was Julio Vanzo. He showed him my little works, and Vanzo offered to teach me technique and the basic principles of painting; drawing had been born with me. My mother was against it — I was only a girl of nine or ten.

03First steps

When I was eleven my father died, and I went on drawing and painting without his support, every hour of the day.

04First exhibitions

I didn’t study at secondary school, and at the end of each school year I had to sit exams in several subjects. With some stumbles along the way I qualified as a schoolteacher, and the following year I received a little card from Marcelo Dasso. He had seen my drawings and was offering to be my teacher. He was, for a long time, and despite my shyness he got me to show paintings in group exhibitions and finally, in 1975, to hold my first solo exhibition at what was then Galería Diez. That was the beginning of a competition with myself that still goes on.
